This week, we\u2019re digging a little deeper to uncover what the high-tech industry might be able to tell us about <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/electronics-news-trends\/electronics-supply-chain-outlook-for-2023-part-2-a-longer-horizon\/\">the future<\/a> of electronics design.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Are New Design Approaches Game Changers For GPUs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphics processing units (GPUs), <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2023\/01\/20\/what-is-ai-computing\/\">originally designed for gaming<\/a>, have been a vital complement to central processing units (CPUs) for deep learning models. This is because GPUs can process large amounts of relatively simple calculations in parallel, while CPUs are <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/obsolescence-management\/end-of-life-management-the-reactive-vs-proactive-approach\/\">better suited<\/a> for more complex algorithms that can be performed sequentially.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But two alternatives are growing in popularity to boost processing speeds as machine learning scales in complexity: Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In contrast to general-purpose integrated circuits (ICs), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baesystems.com\/en-us\/definition\/what-are-asics\">ASICs<\/a> are fine-tuned for a specific purpose. ASICs are lightning-fast and more compact than ICs, but their increased complexity makes them more prone to tape-out failure. As their functions are hardwired into their circuitry, their printed circuit boards (<a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/global-sourcing\/fabless-oems-are-making-semiconductor-chips-faster-and-smaller-what-that-means-for-organic-substrate-packaging\/\">PCBs<\/a>) would need to be altered for adjustments and upgrades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eejournal.com\/article\/fpgas-vs-asics-choose-your-path-carefully\/\">which is technically possible<span style=\"color: #6e7288;\">,<\/span><\/a> but difficult. This makes them ideal for short-lived, computationally-heavy processes like <a href=\"https:\/\/michaeltaylor.org\/papers\/Taylor_Bitcoin_IEEE_Computer_2017.pdf\">crypto mining<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hardware Upgrade Problems Are Being Solved With Software <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FPGAs turn the ASIC hardware upgrade problem into a software solution. They\u2019re a bit bulkier, slower, and power-heavy than optimized ASICs, but users can completely reprogram microchip functions without modifying hardware components, making them the ideal choice for flexible systems. In practical, real-world application, Microsoft Research has already utilized Intel FPGAs to build the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/project-catapult\/\">world\u2019s first hyperscale supercomputer<\/a>. The work of Project Catapult, the company\u2019s code name for this enterprise-level initiative, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/project-catapult\/\">summarized<\/a> as this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\"><em>[This] innovative board-level architecture is highly flexible. The FPGA can act as a local compute accelerator, an inline processor, or a remote accelerator for distributed computing. In this design, the FPGA sits between the datacenter\u2019s top-of-rack (ToR) network switches and the server\u2019s network interface chip (NIC). As a result, all network traffic is routed through the FPGA, which can perform line-rate computation on even high-bandwidth network flows. <\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>System-On-A-Chip (SoC) Devices Are Emerging To Enhance Computing Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NVIDIA created <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/20\/whats-a-dpu-data-processing-unit\/\">data processing units<\/a> (DPUs) to superpower their <a href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/nvidia-launches-accelerated-ethernet-platform-for-hyperscale-generative-ai\">hyperscale generative AI<\/a> algorithms. Here\u2019s how the company <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/blog\/power-the-next-wave-of-applications-with-nvidia-bluefield-3-dpus\/\">describes<\/a> it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In a modern software-defined data center, the OS executing virtualization, network, storage, and security can consume nearly half of the data center\u2019s CPU cores and associated power. Data centers must accelerate every workload to reclaim power and free CPUs for revenue-generating workloads. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/networking\/products\/data-processing-unit\/\"><em>NVIDIA BlueField data processing units (DPUs)<\/em><\/a><em>offload and accelerate the data center OS and infrastructure software.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Synopsis has released SoC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synopsys.com\/designware-ip\/processor-solutions\/arc-npx-family.html\">neural processing units<\/a> (NPUs) that can individually perform up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synopsys.com\/designware-ip\/processor-solutions\/arc-npx-family.html\">440 trillion<\/a> operations per second. The company believes this new development will address the demands of real-time computing with ultra-low power consumption for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.synopsys.com\/2022-04-19-Synopsys-Introduces-Industrys-Highest-Performance-Neural-Processor-IP\">AI applications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just a few of many innovations that have the potential to impact the development of new <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/electronics-news-trends\/electronics-supply-chain-outlook-for-2023-part-2-a-longer-horizon\/\">electronic components<\/a>, and in turn, signal the end of the road for existing components.
