This results in an average lifespan of 1.29 years and 30,700<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-58572385\">\u00a0tons<\/a><\/span> of e-waste \u2014 equivalent to tossing almost two iPhone 13s per transaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is ironic, given that ASICs are utilized by crypto miners <em>because<\/em> they\u2019re more energy efficient than other processors, and the industry needs it: Bitcoin mining alone is estimated to consume<span> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/2021\/09\/20\/bitcoins-impacts-on-climate-and-the-environment\/\">121.36 terawatt hours a year<\/a><\/span>, more than the energy consumption of Google, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft combined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before pointing fingers, crypto miners aren\u2019t the only culprits: globally, 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste was produced in 2019, a figure that\u2019s estimated to<span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0921344921005103\">double by 2050<\/a><\/span>. The fact is humans have a high demand for fast, specialized processors, and an equally if not more important demand to reduce our plastic waste, as the amount of microplastics in the oceans already outnumbers <span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2017\/02\/552052-turn-tide-plastic-urges-un-microplastics-seas-now-outnumber-stars-our-galaxy\">the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3>Are FPGAs the answer to reducing the industry\u2019s carbon footprint?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Field Programmable Gate Arrays (<a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/obsolescence-management\/when-planning-for-obsolescence-stay-current-to-stay-ahead\/\">FPGAs<\/a>), which can be completely reprogrammed by users without altering their hardware, offer a solution to minimize the semiconductor industry\u2019s carbon footprint and spur Microchip manufacturing sustainability. The problem is that FPGAs are slower and utilize more power than ASICs. So, how can we harness the environmentally-friendliness of FPGAs without sacrificing performance?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, there\u2019s no simple answer to this question.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, it\u2019s going to be a matter of refining (even reinventing) programming processes on a global scale \u2014 no easy task. In the crypto world, for example, a shift from proof of work to<span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/02\/28\/1069190\/ethereum-moved-to-proof-of-stake-why-cant-bitcoin\/\">proof of stake<\/a><\/span> to validate transactions would significantly reduce energy consumption and potentially allow for more use of FPGA miners, but proof of stake comes at a cost that some believe is too close to<span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fintechnexus.com\/pow-vs-pos-and-why-you-should-care\/\">centralization<\/a><\/span>, which violates the foundation that cryptocurrencies were created on.<\/p>\n<h3>The emerging role of analog circuitry<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution may lie in taking a step back to analog circuitry. While our computers have largely shifted to digital systems, analog can actually be significantly more efficient. In fact, analog deep learning has been demonstrated to run<span> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2022\/analog-deep-learning-ai-computing-0728\">1 million times faster<\/a><\/span> than digital in recent MIT experiments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridging the gap between FPGAs and analog circuits (so-called analog FPGAs) offers potentially significantly faster computing capabilities for neural networks and there may be a turnaround in the coming years to favor analog circuitry for specific, computationally-heavy applications.
