But just because your component may be approaching obsolescence, doesn\u2019t mean your product needs to.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boeing\u2019s B-52 Stratofortress, referred to as \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104465\/b-52h-stratofortress\/\">backbone<\/a> of the strategic bomber force for the United States\u201d by the US Air Force, was first flown in 1954, and is expected to operate through 2050. On the other side of the spectrum, semiconductor leader NVIDIA releases a <a href=\"https:\/\/gadgetmates.com\/when-is-nvidias-geforce-50-series-of-gpus-coming-out\">new GPU model every two years<\/a>. With each new generation of electronic components comes inherently less support for older generations, and, eventually, a halt in production for older models.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OEMs that have done their <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/defense-aerospace\/3-strategies-to-strengthen-your-military-or-aerospace-electronics-supply-chain\/\">due diligence<\/a> have already identified which products will likely face obsolescence-related challenges by monitoring market developments, demand forecasting, supply chain shortages, and signs of end-of-life notices. Now what? Here are three strategies for mitigating legacy part obsolescence.<\/p>\n<h3>Find other suppliers and stock up.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first and easiest step is to stock up on existing components and commit to a so-called \u201clifetime buy\u201d to carry the product through its lifetime \u2014 or at least, for as long as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2022, the US Navy placed a $25 million order to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to provide diminishing manufacturing source (DMS) management for its F-35 combat jets, specifically for electronic components such as computer processors, <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/global-sourcing\/fpgas-and-their-eco-friendly-edge-for-microchip-manufacturing-sustainability\/\">FPGAs<\/a>, power supplies, and Databus Interface Chips. Lockheed\u2019s solution: lifetime buys of the relevant electronic components.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a quarter-billion dollar investment is far from pocket change, even for the US military, the purchase was described by John Keller, Editor-in-Chief of Military &amp; Aerospace Electronics Magazine, as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militaryaerospace.com\/computers\/article\/14287097\/obsolescence-electronic-parts-combat-jets\">a good deal<\/a>\u201d given the amount of time and money required to redesign and win certification for safety and performance of a new design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/shortage-mitigation\/3-moves-to-make-now-to-ensure-a-robust-chip-supply-in-2024\/\">Establish a solid network of suppliers<\/a> and backup suppliers to source your electronic components. When stockpiling these essential parts, be sure to follow best practices for <a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/inventory-solutions\/4-storage-tips-for-keeping-your-electronic-safety-stock-safe\/\">keeping your electronic safety stock safe<\/a>. The only thing worse than being stuck without a backup supply of critical electronic components is having that supply compromised due to inadequate storage practices.<\/p>\n<h3>Identify alternative components.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step is to find alternative components that are different but can be integrated into your current system without a complete overhaul of the current design. This needs to happen at the initial design stage, with realistic program planning that accounts for all the details to make an accurate cost estimate of future upgrade needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, announcements of upgrades for the F-35 put the Department of Defense in the spotlight. Original estimates for the entire \u201cBlock 4 upgrade\u201d for the F-35 were set at $10.6b with completion in 2026, but have risen to $16.5b with completion expected in 2029. \u201cFundamentally, the problem with the modernisation programme is that the DoD has not been able to distinguish its higher-than-expected costs, leaving the US Congress with \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforce-technology.com\/news\/us-dod-makes-a-move-on-the-struggling-f135-engine-upgrade\/?cf-view\">no clear picture<\/a> of why demands and costs have spiked,\u2019\u201d as explained by Airforce Technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rising costs led to an investigation performed by the US Government Accountability Office (GOA). In their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/d24107177.pdf\">report<\/a>, they conclude that \u201cthe program did not complete an analysis of alternatives.\u201d Additionally, the GOA found \u201canalytical gaps in the program\u2019s comparative analysis\u2014in areas such as unaddressed technical risks and cost estimating\u2014meaning that the military services\u2019 decisions were not informed by this key information.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When planning for alternative components, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-20-195g\">GOA recommends<\/a> the following for realistic cost estimations: take into account the purpose, scope, and schedule of a cost estimate; a technical baseline description; a work breakdown structure; ground rules and assumptions; data collection; estimating methodologies; sensitivity and risk analysis; documenting and presenting results; and updating estimates with actual costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey &amp; Company recommends evaluating components by \u201cfit, form, and function,\u201d segmenting components by their risk of obsolescence and employing experts who can sufficiently assess the availability of alternative components.<a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/shortage-mitigation\/use-these-3-strategies-to-prepare-for-the-next-shortage-market\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/electronics-news-trends\/automotive-electronic-components-an-emerging-industry-to-watch\/\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #6e7288;\"><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/shortage-mitigation\/2023-semiconductor-ma-activity-intensifies\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/a2globalelectronics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Picture1-1.png&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; min_height=&#8221;239px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|||1px||&#8221; inline_fonts=&#8221;Arial,Verdana&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/aerospace-and-defense\/our-insights\/how-industrial-and-aerospace-and-defense-oems-can-win-the-obsolescence-challenge\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Develop redesign plans that carry your product into the future.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the step you want to avoid taking for as long as possible, while paradoxically being prepared for it as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The F-35 isn\u2019t quite there yet, but making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforce-technology.com\/news\/gao-no-clear-picture-for-f-35-block-4-cost-growth-and-delays\/\">headlines<\/a> like, \u201cThe world\u2019s most sophisticated platform will be far less survivable than anticipated due to the US Government\u2019s Block 4 mismanagement\u201d doesn\u2019t bode well. In the same announcement that revealed the contracts awarded for the F-35 upgrades, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforce-technology.com\/news\/us-pentagon-redesign-aircraft-due-to-a-lack-of-components\/\">complete redesigns<\/a> of two other aircraft were also announced \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/navyrecognition.com\/index.php\/naval-news\/naval-news-archive\/2023\/may1\/13110-northrop-grumman-wins-new-contract-for-mq-4c-triton-uas.html\">one of which<\/a> has only been used by the US Navy since 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing at what point in a product\u2019s lifecycle a redesign will be necessary, along with its costs, can help OEMs extend the lifetime of their products and avoid costly redesigns before they\u2019re absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<h3>Proactive Obsolescence Management for Defense and Aerospace<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic component obsolescence is very different for aerospace and defense compared to other industries because the lifetimes of their products are significantly longer than the electronic components that support them.
